Flags at half-mast and a minute's silence for Paris

On Monday 16 November, flags will fly at half-mast at Leiden University and a minute's silence will be observed as a mark of respect for France following the recent atrocities in Paris.

Our sympathies

The academic community at Leiden University expresses its support to the French people following the abhorrent events in Paris on the night of Friday 13 November. We would like to convey our sympathies to the families and relatives of the victims and to the whole of the French nation. In memory of those who lost their lives, flags will be flown at half-mast at all University premises on 16 November and at 12.00 noon we will observe a minute's silence. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by these tragic events, and we wish them strength and fortitude. Sadly, Paris is not the only scene of such appalling events. Our thoughts go out to all innocent victims of terror.

We stand firm for freedom of spirit, thought and speech.

On behalf of the Leiden University academic community,

Carel Stolker
Rector Magnificus and President of the Executive Board
