Two leading Leiden scientists appointed to The Young Academy

Two out of the ten new members of The Young Academy (DJA) are from Leiden. As from 17 March 2011, Professor Roberta D´Alessandro (Italian Linguistics) and Dr Beatrice de Graaf (Modern History) will join this Dutch club of fifty young top scientists.

Within the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), The Young Academy is an independent platform of fifty pioneering young scientists with innovative views on science and science policy. The Young Academy consists of researchers in the 25 – 45 age bracket who have been selected on the basis of scientific excellence, interdisciplinary approaches and broad interest in scientific practice and science communications. It is chaired by Professor Eveline Crone, Leiden University.

Professor of Italian Language and Culture Roberta D´Alessandro (1973) researches both theoretical linguistics and dialectology. After receiving a so-called VIDI subsidy from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, she recently started a project focused on separating and clustering grammatical information. She also set up a new line of research into the comparative grammar of southern Italian dialects, specifically Abruzzese, still a virtually unknown dialect, and languages such as Basque, Georgian and Hindi.

She helped set up the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies at Campus The Hague. She has been granted a VIDI subsidy for research into securitisation in Western history: How does anything end up on the political agenda as an issue of national security? Also, as a fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study ( NIAS), she set up a research group to investigate the impact of terrorism processes.
